Screams came from the second story of an older farm house, the sound of glass shattering echoing throughout the fields. A 14 year-old Dani had smashed a clear vase in her room and now the glass and dead flowers lay limp on the floor, her not even paying them any mind. On to her bed she flopped angrily, screaming into her bed sheets once more. There were no words to her screaming, just loud screeches of pure madness that was raging through her veins.
Downstairs her parents sat on the couch, dumbfounded at the noises coming from their daughter's bedroom. When Danielle had been a child she was never cross nor had anger of any kind, always giving instead of receiving. Their little angel had been perfect until that day..
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It had been a normal Sunday morning and everyone in the house was getting ready for church. Danielle's Mom had laid out her clothes, like normal, for this coming day. A beautiful yellow dress with daisy's and white tights with black strap-on shoes, plus a little yellow headband to match. Though, to their surprise, Dani did not come down those steps with her outfit on as her Mother had planned it. Their 10 year-old daughter was wearing a t-shirt with a pair of tight fitting jeans and tennis shoes, but she really didn't seem like anything was wrong.
"What're you doing, Dani? I had your clothes laid out for you, "Her mother asked, turning away from washing some of the dishes from the morning breakfast. She said nothing, moving to sit at the table with her father and in front of her usual Apple Cinnamon oatmeal. Something, who knew what, must have snapped inside that little child's brain because within seconds the bowl was seen hurling across the room. Oatmeal spilled everywhere across the kitchen and soon the bowl landed in it's destination, against the wall where it shattered.
Both parents leaped out of their skin at their daughter's sporadic outburst and stared at their child with questionable looks, exchanging some to each other as well.
"I want donuts, "Dani said, turning her blue eyes first to her mother, then over to her father and giving a sweet smile.
It was that day that Danielle had been taken to the hospital where she underwent many tests to figure out if she was a "Night Demon" as her parents described it. Silver needles being placed in the skin, UV light tests, Tilt-tables, EKGs, MRIs, many, many vials of blood and a week later she was sent home. They were astonished to find out that she.. was just a little girl. "Some people hit puberty and change immediately.. Others.. gradually. Dani is just a normal, growing girl, "the doctor had explained, leaving the girl to her parents.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That had only been four years ago, and now their girl who had changed overnight was terrorizing her bedroom like a raging maniac.
The Lewis' had been warned several times that a red-headed child was prone to being fiery and completely unruly, but they had reassured themselves that their daughter would never be that way. It was surprise that she had even come out with red hair considering neither of her parents were red-headed, but it was called a recessive gene for a reason. Somewhere along the lines, one of the families had red hair but who's they didn't know and most of the time didn't care.
Danielle's upstairs bedroom went silent for a few moments and in that moment, her parents almost believed she had calmed down. It was only the calm before the storm as another scream sounded out, this time words accompanying the anger, "I HATE YOU! I HATE YOU!" Another slam against a wall, and it was obvious it was a fist breaking through the drywall.
Danielle's father stood up, turning to his wife, "I'm going to go talk to her. She's going to tear this house apart, Mary-Anne. We have to do something, we're her parents and we can't keep letting her do this."
No, it wasn't the first time she'd thrown such a tantrum, it was more like the hundredth since four years ago. Anytime she was confronted or angered she lashed out like a tornado destroying everything in her path, even people at times.
She'd been kicked out of school by the age of 12 because of the serious fights she'd been in; One kid could look at her the wrong way and his nose would be broken. Another girl was sent to the hospital in critical condition for making fun of Danielle's hair, and that was a moment she was proud of. From then on, she was home schooled, which proved to be an even greater challenge because Dani had tuned out from the world. In "class" she would stare at her mother blankly, like she wasn't even there. At "recess" she would read.. and her reading had gone from sweet, love stories to darker tales of vampires and werewolves.
When asked why she read such nasty, horrifying tales she responded, "I like the story line better than happily, ever after. It's just a lot more interesting when someone dies.." What had happened to their precious daughter?
In her room Danielle got up from her bed and grabbed the side of her desk, using all of her strength and adrenaline to tip it over with all of the contents scattering on the floor. The chair was tossed aside like a piece of paper, slamming into the wall and making another hole near the other covered ones she'd done by her own hand. Right hand throbbed relentlessly as she grabbed things with it, sure that something was broken in it. She didn't care, though, she just kept tantruming until she heard a knock at the door.
Running over to her alarm clock, she grabbed it and ripped it out of the wall to throw it at the door, denting it and cracking the plastic coating severely. Even though the door had just been hit, her father cracked it open and gazed at her as she sat on the bed. It came open wider and she was grabbing her lamp, it being hurled at him at full force.
"I HATE YOU, "Danielle screamed again, her face scrunching in anger. Cheeks were red on her pale face as her blue eyes stared daggers into her parent. If looks could kill, she would have laid a bomb on the house and walked away without a scratch.
Her father tried to get closer, only to have a pillow thrown viciously at his head. "Now Danielle, "He grabbed the pillow out of the air and tossed it to his side, "you know why we can't let you go to his house this late. We've explained it many of times that it's dangerous. We don't even go out at night, honey."
A trinket was grabbed off of her headboard and hurled at his head, which he was able to duck just as it grazed his hair, "I don't CARE! Grandma was a different story than me! I know what's out there and I can protect myself! I know how to kill those things! I know what they look like, I can protect myself!"
Dave tried to be calm with his daughter, but her teenage know-it-all attitude tried his patience more times then he could control. Sighing, he moved to sit on her bed and tried to rub her should which she jerked away in anger and stood up again. Another item was grabbed out of her stuffed animals, but it wasn't a stuffed animal. A black Glock was pulled from those animals as she showed it to her father, his face turning from calm to surprised and angered.
"Where did you get that, "He screamed, standing and snatching it out of her hand with lightning quick speed, "He gave it to you didn't he? That's it, your not allowed to see him again. That's final. If I catch you around him again, you'll never see the light of another day again, you hear me?!"
Danielle wasn't able to hold on to her possession and lost it faster than she had grabbed it, a scream coming once more as he commanded her not to see the man again. "You can't do that, "She screamed to his back as he moved to leave with her gun, "It's not in your control! I'm going to do what I wanna do!"
With that, her father left the room and the door slammed behind him and not another word spoken.

SHE WAS GOING!
No matter what her father had said, she was going whether he liked it or not. Dani grabbed some stuffed animals angrily and shoved them beneath her covers, tucking them in neatly so it appeared as if she was sleeping in bed. It was an older trick, but it fooled them many more times then it should have. Quickly, she moved to her bag and packed a few essentials. Toothbrush, brush and floss that was always found in there, deodorant and some clean clothes. Throwing her back pack over her shoulder, she moved toward the window and lifted it up, climbing out.
Slowly, she closed it and descended the lattice on the side of the house, jumping when there was only a few more feet to go. Moving around the side of the old farm house, she grabbed her bike. She always kept it out of the garage just in case she needed it for an emergency and now was the time it came in handy. As she kicked up the stand on it, her hand moved across the silver handlebars and she pursed her lips, looking out into the black night. There were terrible creatures out there, ones that in an instant could kill her and she was going to ride a mile to his house?
Yes.
Leg was thrown over the bike and her butt placed on the seat and she was off. Thankfully in an hour of riding, she had arrived unscathed by the creatures. Honestly, she hadn't even seen any.
The Ohio town of Bradford was small, and everyone knew just about the whole town and it's goings on. To say the least, it was a farmer's town to the bone. Shops and Grocery stores were tiny and gossip was inevitable. Dani had been talked about several times by other people, but she seemed to be the town trouble maker. Whenever she would disobey her parents or cause a ruckus, the town knew just by looking at the grown-ups who'd raised her. 'Poor Dave and Mary-Anne', they would say, 'they have one child and she's about the worst rotten egg you'd ever seen.'
Vampires and Werewolves were scarce around these parts, but when they were around everyone knew it. It was like an alarm went off in the town and everyone would scatter, hiding within their houses at night.
Why had her father kept her inside tonight, there wasn't any 'Night Creatures' out. Bike tire went from asphalt to grass as she rolled into his yard, moving up to the large porch from a wheel chair ramp. The house was completely red bricked except for the porch, which was a nice textured concrete on the inside and red bricked on the outside. It was a one story house, small and this time of night there was a small flickering in the living room window. It was probably the TV.
Danielle and Gus went back a long ways in her childhood, but it was only recently that she'd actually begun to get attached to the older fellow. They're history together began when she was only four or five years old on the Fourth of July.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mary-Anne and her daughter had gone to visit the Fourth of July fair that was held there in Bradford. It was nothing spectacular, but she liked to honor the veterans who served their country. It was a small celebration with just a simple petting zoo and a few vendors came to sell their items. Danielle was carting around her old Teddy Bear, which she always clung to. The stuffing was beginning to come out of it's chocolate body and both eyes were missing, not to mention it was so dirty. Her mother couldn't even pry it out of her hands long enough to wash it properly.
Just as her mother turned around for a moment to talk to a person, Danielle had seen a baby lamb and got separated from her mother by accident. A few moments later when she turned around, her mother was gone and she started to cry out her name. It was then that Gus had found her shaken and crying for her mother and taken her to sit down and get a snow cone.
Dani sniffled as she ate it and asked how he lost his leg, him beginning to go one about how he was fighting to keep us all safe and a gun had blown it off. She blinked for a little bit and frowned, sad that he had no leg but more sad because she couldn't find her mother. It was then and only then that Gus turned to the little girl and told her, "Life is tricky, sweetie. Once you stop looking for something, it'll always find it's way back to you."
Like fate had timed it, her mother hollered her name in panic and she leaped out of her chair to greet her. Of course, Mary-Anne thanked the man and Danielle did to with a hug and a kiss. From then on, it was the best friendship any girl could ask for.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Putting her red bike up on the porch she moved over to the screen door which squeaked as she opened it, her left hand coming to knock on the wood door behind it. For a little while, she stood there staring a the door before it finally opened. Normal people would have looked for someone either their height or above, but Dani was already looking down. When the door finally opened, an older man was sitting in a wheel chair, looking up.
His hair was perfect military cut and snow white. Face was clean shaved, but many scars lay all around it and about his body. On his left forearm, a sexy sailor lady tattoo that was old and bled out. Eyebrows were furry and he looked as if he hadn't slept in years, several sagging bags under his eyes as well as other wrinkles about his body. Deep laugh lines were on his face and body sagged like an old sack of potatoes, pot belly seated slightly on his thighs. Tonight he was wearing a white T-shirt with several yellow and brown stains on it with red plaid pants, left leg tied off at the knee in a knot.
The man stared up at Dani as she stood there, confusion on his face, "Danielle Lewis, what the hell are you doing here? It's late, you know what lurks around here.." His voice was sort of whispered as she rushed in through the door and he shut and locked it behind them, turning around as she did the same to face him. One would have that the man they were talking about was her boyfriend, but it wasn't. She really wasn't popular and all of the people her age knew what she did because of the gossip, so she barely had any friends at all.
"I HATE them, Gus. I hate them so much! My Dad told me I couldn't see you anymore and what's worse is he took my gun away from me! That one you gave me to protect myself, " she yelled to him, slamming her fist down on her thigh to show more of her disapproval of the demands that were set forth by her parent, scrunching her face. Her cheeks were red from the cool night air, having only been wearing a T-shirt and pants when it was about fifty or sixty degrees out.
Gus shook his head, wheeling back over to his Dinner which was sitting on a stand in the living room, "You don't hate them, you hate their rules sweetie." Placing it back on his lap, he began to try and cut his steak again before Danielle came over and took the utensil's from him. Softly, she began to cut his steak with ease, pursing her lips, "No, I really do this time. They've tried to control me my entire life and I'm so tired of it. I want to hunt and they won't even let me come over to your house at night, so what makes you think they're going to want to let me do that?" When she finished she gave the utensils back to him and sat in the chair next to his, throwing her book bag down on the floor in front of her.
Gus grabbed a piece of the steak with his fork and put it in his mouth, blue eyes turning to Danielle's frustrated face, "Of course they don't want you to hunt, Dani, they care about your safety. It's a dangerous world out there and anything could happen. You're their only daughter." She scoffed at him, turning her head up wards to look him in the eye, "I can't believe that because I can take care of myself and I don't understand why they can't see that!"
It was then that the pain was beginning to come back to her hand, pursing her lips some as she began to cradle it. She was so fired up earlier that everything had blocked it out, but now she was somewhere she could relax it throbbed again. Gus knew that look all too well and held out his hand as he chewed. When he finally swallowed, he spoke, "Gimme your hand. What did you do?"
"Punched a wall.. I think I broke something, "She turned it over to him, noting the large bruise on the back of it with a slight frown. Offering her hand to him, he took it and pressed slightly down on her knuckle, noting it when she winced and sucked in, "It's broken. You better be more careful." Without any warning at all, he grabbed her finger with one hand and the rest of her own hand in the other and pushed it really hard inward. Dani let out a yelp and whined, pulling it away from him, "What the hell, Gus?"
A glare came from him as he picked up his utensils again, giving her a disapproving look. He was an old fashioned man and children didn't use curse words where he came from. They were respectful, but Dani was like the child he'd never had so he just left it at the disapproving look, "I set it. At least it'll heal correctly. Now why do you wanna hunt, Dani?" He picked his fork again and took another bite, beginning to chew on it.
"I don't know.., " she cradled her hand with the other one, "I'm just tired of not being able to run my own life, you know? You only live once and I don't want my one time to be ruined by a bunch of Creepy Crawlers at night." When she was done speaking, she smiled at her comment and watched him carefully. Gus chuckled and shook his head a little bit, before swallowing, "They're a lot more then just a bunch of 'Creepy Crawlers', Dani. They're dangerous and they could kill you without a second thought. I ran into a few when I was in the war, I know what they're capable of."
Danielle knew all the stories of Gus and Vampires, especially over in Germany during WWII. For a short time, he'd become a hunter himself and received several purple hearts from saving his fellow men from the claws of those creatures.
